New SA reality show inspired by digital cameras

A new South African reality television show premiering on M-Net this coming Sunday, 7 November, has been inBose, the leading name in home audio sound systems, has decided to put the sound way up on television as well.
Most television manufacturers have been in a race to slim down flat screen television sets to such an extent that there has remained almost no room for decent speakers inside.

Bose is changing this trend with its VideoWave entertainment system. The television set with its 1.16 metre (46 inch), 1080p HD LCD display has the sixteen speakers – which include six woofers in a magnesium enclosure – built in. This means that this baby is not quite as skinny when viewed from the side as many of its rivals. Nor is it particularly lightweight, tipping the scale at just under 100 pounds (about 45 kilograms). But since it carries the Bose name, it far outweighs other televisions in another crucial aspect: sound quality.

The audio specialist company has injected its signature sonic sound technology into the VideoWave. The system uses Bose’s proprietary Adaptiq technology to automatically calibrate the surround sound according to the specific size and shape of the room it is in – which it is able to recognise and then to adjust the sound accordingly – while the Bose PhaseGuide sound radiator’s directional technology is employed to accurately ‘fire’ beams of high frequency audio waves from both sides of the system, causing it to bounce off adjacent walls and thereby spectacularly creating the effect of crystal clear, perfect surround sound.

The result? A Daily Mail writer who has seen and heard the system in action describes it as “the best built-in sound I’ve ever heard from a TV.”

Another innovation is the VideoWave’s accompanying ClickPad remote control. One would expect a system with such a complex array of sound technology to have a remote control with thousands of buttons, but it is as basic and barebones as a remote control can get. There is buttons for power, input, channel selection, mute and volume. Other actions can be easily controlled with an easy-to-use click pad on the remote control. If you touch it, glide your finger over it or click it, a menu will appear on your VideoWave screen, right alongside whatever you are watching. This will allow you to control anything else that you have hooked up to your set, such as your Blu-ray player, your PVR, video game system, iPod, etc. (which all connect to the VideoWave via one console, which can be neatly hidden away).

Unfortunately the VideoWave will not be appearing in any Christmas stockings in South Africa this year. Even though it has recently become available from Bose outlets in the US, the Bose supplier in South Africa, Sound Imports, has informed us that this unit will not be available locally in the near future.
